Launched in 1970 by Doug Kenney, Henry Beard, and Robert Hoffman, National Lampoon exploded out of the Harvard Lampoon and redefined comedy for a generation that was done playing nice. Where others poked fun, Lampoon went for the throat.
This wasn’t safe satire. It was raw, offensive, fearless, and brutally funny. Politics, religion, sex, Hollywood, nothing was off limits. Every issue pushed boundaries further, backed by some of the sharpest comedic minds of the era.
From legendary covers to absurd photo spreads and unfiltered writing, National Lampoon became the blueprint for modern comedy. It launched the careers of writers and performers who would go on to shape everything from Saturday Night Live to cult-classic films like Animal House and Vacation.
If it existed, Lampoon destroyed it.
